The Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives at Syracuse University Libraries is dedicated to personalizing and memorializing all 270 victims of the disaster; and documenting the work of investigators, advocates, and the victims’ families towards justice and improved aviation security. Applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the Archives, and should reference their research in their answers to the following questions.
The Archives are located on the sixth floor of Bird Library, and are open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Please check the Syracuse University Libraries’ website for information on additional seasonal hours. Welcome to the Remembrance Scholarship application. Please read the following before starting your application.
  • Only students who will graduate from Syracuse University in either December 2018 or May 2019 are eligible to apply.
  • Complete all parts of the application form.
  • You can work on any part of the application in any order.
  • You can save your work as you go (by clicking “Save Draft”) and return to work on it later.
  • You can continue to work on your saved application at any time until the deadline, 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time Zone), January 23rd.


  1. Answer all biographical questions.
  2. Write three short essays (no longer than 500 words each).
  3. Request two (2) letters of recommendation. Complete the information on the request form. You must complete separate forms for each recommender. Your recommender will be sent an email with instructions for submitting the recommendations.
  • One letter of recommendation must be from a faculty member who has taught, advised, mentored or supervised you.
  • The second letter of recommendation may be from an individual who knows you in a professional capacity (employer or supervisor), or it may be from another professor.
  • You must use a valid email address for each recommender for this to be successful. Your recommender will receive a notification from this system to upload their recommendation to your application.
  1. Submit an unofficial transcript from Syracuse University and transcripts for any other single institution from which you earned 10 or more credits.


  • Request letters of recommendation early and confirm with your recommenders that they have submitted their materials.
  • Proofread to ensure that all parts of the application are complete, accurate, and well written.
  • After you have completed the online application, click “Submit.”
  • Your application will not be considered unless all sections, including the letters of recommendation, are completed and you successfully submit the application.
  • Once you click “Submit,” your application will be sent to the Remembrance Scholar Selection Committee and you CANNOT change it.
  • After your application is complete and has been submitted to the Remembrance Scholar Selection Committee, you will be able to view it.
